Bob Jones University curriculum We do a weekly memory verse. We learn about God's judgment and grace, building Godly character, Christmas unit of God being with us, obedience, Being holy, my body, God's temple, evangelism and missions, Easter: Christ's saving work, growing in grace and knowledge, and foundations for living. English/Language Arts/Writing: English/Language Arts: IEW Grammar: Fix-It Grammar: (Book 1: The Nose Tree) Writing: IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing: Teaching Structure and Style in Writing- 2nd Edition) Fix-It Grammar - Book 1: The Nose Tree Students learn grammar skills by finding and correcting errors in daily passages that cumulatively tell a story. The 5th graders will complete Book 1: The Nose Tree. While completing the story, students will apply knowledge skills in context, which will help transfer grammar skills into their own writing. The following grammar skills taught with The Nose Tree are: indenting, nouns, homophones, ends marks, articles, quotations, pronouns, who-which clauses, action verbs, identifying strong verbs, apostrophes to show ownership, helping verbs, contractions, adjectives, capitals, adverbs, prepositions, coordinating conjunctions, clauses, and comparative adjectives. IEW: The fifth graders will begin to learn and use writing strategies/methods established by the Institute for Excellence in Writing. The students will complete the following units in 5th grade: 1- Note making and Outlines, 2-Summarizing from Notes, 3- Summarizing Narrative Stories, 4-Summarizing a Reference, 5-Writing from Pictures, 6-Library Research Papers, 7-Creative Writing, 8-Essay Writing, and 9-Formal Critiques. Reading: We explore vocabulary, comprehension questions, summaries, character studies, and graphic organizers with our literature units. We also use the Accelerated Reading program. Literature Units: Caddie Woodlawn, Derwood, The Wednesday Wars, Pictures of Hollis Woods, The Westing Game Spelling: Bob Jones University Press Students have 25 words a week. They work on a spelling packet each morning to help them spell and understand word meanings. Mathematics: Bob Jones University Press In math we learn about place value, multiplication, and expressions; dividing whole numbers; add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals; work with equivalent fractions, lowest common multiple, lowest common factor; add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators; multiply and divide fractions; explore algebra patterns and graphing; convert units of measure; and explore geometry and volume. Science: Purposeful Design ACSI We study natural cycles, life cycles, cells, ecological successions, measuring and changing matter, forces and work, electricity and magnetism, earth's processes, natural resources, weather and climate, sun, earth and moon, transitions in our body, and diseases. Social Studies: Bob Jones University Press We study history starting with Native Americans all the way to present day United States history. We talk about how we became a nation, the Revolutionary War, the Gilded Age, World War I, nations of the earth, The Roaring Twenties, The Depression, rulers who ruled with iron fists, World War II, recovery from war, The Cold War, 1940's-present day. Specials: Art, Computers, Music, PE (three times a week), Library, and Chapel Field Trips: We go to DeVos Hall to listen to the Grand Rapids Symphony. Fifth Grade Extras: The fifth graders participate in the Christmas play; the Academic Fair; safeties; speech meet, and the spelling bee. |
