Our Program

Bible:  Purposeful Design
We do a weekly memory verse.  Our Bible is an 
Old Testament survey, presenting major Bible concepts from the Old Testament by studying main men and women from the Old Testament. 

English/Language Arts/Writing:

English/Language Arts: IEW 
Grammar: Fix-It Grammar: (Book 3: Robin Hood)
Writing: IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing: Teaching Structure and Style in Writing- 2nd Edition)

Fix-It Grammar - Book 3: Robin Hood

Students learn grammar skills by finding and correcting errors in daily passages that cumulatively tell a story.  The 5th graders will complete Book 3: Robin Hood.  While completing the story, students will apply knowledge skills in context, which will help transfer grammar skills into their own writing.  The following grammar skills taught with Robin Hood: indenting, nouns, homophones, ends marks, articles, quotations, pronouns, who-which clauses, action verbs, identifying strong verbs, apostrophes to show ownership,  helping verbs, contractions, adjectives, capitals, adverbs, prepositions, coordinating conjunctions, clauses, and comparative adjectives.  

IEW: The fifth graders will begin to learn and use writing strategies/methods established by the Institute for Excellence in Writing.  The students will complete the following units in 5th grade: 1- Note making and Outlines, 2-Summarizing from Notes, 3- Summarizing Narrative Stories, 4-Summarizing a Reference, 5-Writing from Pictures, 6-Library Research Papers,  7-Creative Writing, 8-Essay Writing, and 9-Formal Critiques. 



Reading:  Bob Jones University Anthology Books 
We explore vocabulary, comprehension questions, summaries, character studies, and graphic organizers with our literature units. We also use the Accelerated Reading program. 

Literature Units:
Misty, Brady, A Horse and His Boy, and Pictures of Hollis Woods

Spelling: Bob Jones University Press
Students have 25 words a week. They work on a spelling packet each morning to help them spell and understand word meanings. They learn vowel patterns, suffixes, homophones, prefixes, consonant sounds, and Greek and Latin word parts. 

Mathematics:  Bob Jones University Press
In math we learn about number sense, addition and subtraction, multiplication, lines and angles, 1-digit and 2-digit divisors, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions, time and customary measurement, perimeter and area, surface area and volume, metric measurement, ratios, proportions, and precents, integers, and data and graphs. 

Science: Purposeful Design ACSI
We study natural cycles, ecological successions, measuring and changing matter, forces and work, electricity and magnetism, earth's processes, natural resources, weather and climate, sun, earth and moon, and transitions in our body.

Social Studies: 
America's Story 3, Teaching is the Sweetest Thing Native American Unit, Student Savvy 2019 Native American Unit. 
History begins with Native Americans. We study where and how they lived in the United States. Major tribes and figures are studied as well as their impact on American culture.  America's Story begins with the early 1900's to modern times.  

Enrichment Classes:
Art, Computers, Music, (twice a week) P.E. (twice a week), Library, and attend weekly Chapel

Field Trips:  
One year we go to Lansing and the next to Charlton Park.

Fifth Grade Extras:  
The fifth graders participate in the Christmas play; safeties; and the spelling bee.
